Poster Win Win Gothenburg Sustainability Award

Journalism in the Service of Democracy - On the Battle Against Disinformation and Conspiracy Theories

The WIN WIN Award 2023 recognizes the laureates Eliot Higgins and Abbie Richard for their work with an entire evening at the Gothenburg City Theatre. The theme is disinformation and what we can do to counter it. On stage to discuss the laureates' work are philosopher and Swedish Academy member Åsa Wikforss, currently known for her book 'Philosophical Clarifications in a Murky Time,' and Christofer Ahlqvist, the editor-in-chief of Göteborgs-Posten. The conversation will be held in English and moderated by Christer Sturmark, CEO and publisher of Fri Tanke.

We live in a turbulent time with an ongoing war in Europe and political movements worldwide questioning the foundations of liberal democracy. The rapid advancement of AI in the past year points towards a digital future where text and images can hardly be verified. What is needed to protect knowledge and democracy from their adversaries?

The need for genuine news and knowledge about society may never have been greater than today, but the battle for truth on the internet is far from over. Bellingcat is an international collective of investigative journalists, led by Eliot Higgins, who have made groundbreaking contributions to journalism in combating disinformation. Bellingcat is this year's recipient of the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award for their fight against anti-democratic forces.

This year's WIN WIN Youth Award is presented to Abbie Richards, who, through social media and her 'The Conspiracy Chart,' has humorously and pedagogically enlightened the public about the mechanisms behind conspiracy theories and disinformation campaigns.

Providing the music is a portion of the orchestra from the Gothenburg City Theatre's production of 'Monica's Waltz,' performing selected pieces from Monica Zetterlund's repertoire.

The conversation is organized by the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award in collaboration with Fri Tanke and the Gothenburg City Theatre.
