Don Juan

A wicked comedy about the world’s most famous womanizer

Director Hilda Hellwig directed a highly successful version of Lärda kvinnor (The School of Women) at Göteborgs Stadsteater (Gothenburg City Theatre) in 2019. With Don Juan, our opening production for the theatre year, she offers us a colorful encounter between Molière and Mozart. A wicked comedy bathed in melodic song, eighteenth century romance and luxurious costumes and wigs.

At Lusterholm, a palace theatre, we follow a theatre ensemble as they rehearse an opera by Mozart. It’s Don Juan, about the world’s most famous philanderer. The guest opera star, who sings the title role, is as charismatic as his role, and young and old alike find him totally irresistible. He is truly grand and he truly sees the women. Fidelity is for numbskulls! To hell with hypocrisy! To hell with your double moral standards!

The opera singer Caspar Engdahl appears as the world renown womanizer and rebel.

Hilda Hellwig has directed at Dramaten (The Royal Dramatic Theatre), Stockholms stadsteater (Stockholm City Theatre), Kungliga Operan (The Swedish Royal Opera), Nationaltheatret i Oslo (National Theatre in Oslo) and Det Kongelige Teater i Köpenhamn (The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen) among others. She served as professor in theatre direction at Stockholms Dramatiska Högskola (Stockholm University of the Arts) from 2008 to 2017. She is also one of the founders of Teater Aurora in Stockholm and served for many years as its artistic leader. Previously at Göteborgs Stadsteater Hilda Hellwig has directed Faust and Faustin and Out and Lärda kvinnor (The School for Women).
