On Tyranny

For All Those Ready to Rebel

We find ourselves in a place, in a time. We’re not quite sure where or when. Perhaps it’s far, far away – a thousand years ago or a thousand years from now. Perhaps it’s a thousand miles away. A hundred years from now. Twenty-five. Five. Or perhaps it’s very, very close. If the crisis comes, we tend to say. But what if it’s already here – and all we know is that everything, absolutely everything, is at stake?

In Backa Theatre’s production, we meet a group of people trying to make sense of the world – and each other – as the rules of the game have fundamentally changed. They find themselves thrown into one situation after another. In a fractured universe of light, shadows, play and resistance, worlds are built up and come crashing down. Someone breaks free. Someone else follows. They link arms. Say hello. Something new begins to take shape.

Loosely inspired by Timothy Snyder’s book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century, this visually striking and physical production explores community, trust, courage and the possibility of acting together, through humour, warmth, music and movement.
