A voyage through the cosmos of the soul
Around Elvira, chaos often ensues. Focusing on boring things is impossible, and anger over not being understood easily takes over. When the school counselor mentions that she might get a support person, the walls come crashing down. What she has been so afraid of is indeed true. She is crazy.
When feeling the most lonely, a figure from the past appears, taking Elvira on a dizzying journey through time. Here, she meets those who throughout history have been called mad. All the fools, lunatics, feeble-minded, and disturbed. Melancholics and hysterics. People whom society has tried to limit, treat, or lock away in various ways.
Madness is based on the ideas of the philosopher Michel Foucault on how perceptions of madness and normality have changed over time. Backa Teater's production gives a grand, humorous, and musical adventure through dungeons, torture chambers, mental asylums, and witch burnings. And through Elvira's free space.
