Kan vi drömma om fantastiska institutioner? Kan vi fantisera kring framtida kultur-institutioners former, funktioner och resurser? Är det möjligt att spekulera över andra sätt att organisera konstnärliga processer och den offentliga sfärens politiska samtal?

Vi befinner oss mellan kollapsen av modernitetens idévärld - industrialisering, framstegstro och tillväxt, välfärdsprojekt och nationalstater - och en svårtolkad framtid där nya berättelser och modeller tar form. Vår syn på social gemenskap, arbete, ekonomi, politik och naturens gränser är under förhandling. Dessa förändringar möter oss både som berättelser om möjligheter och som nattsvart dystopi, och det är uppenbart att vi på många sätt saknar gemensamma begrepp för att navigera och agera. Samtidigt är de institutioner som ska ha kapacitet att bära dessa komplexa samtal under press: Hur ska vi orka tänka under tyngden av mänsklig utmattning, informationsbrus, byråkratisering, politisk populism och accelererande finansiell kortsiktighet.

Begreppet ”institution” leds etymologiskt ur verbet ”instituere”; att sätta igång eller etablera långsiktigt. Att tänka institutionen som ett verb, som ett pågående görande och omskapande kan öppna för att fundera över vad institutionerna ”instituerar”: Vad de - förutom att innehålla rader av konstprojekt, föreställningar eller utställningar - egentligen etablerar långsiktigt? Vilka konkreta politiska och ekonomiska val och praktiker bygger upp institutionens verksamhet? Vilka kunskaper och resurser ackumuleras och hur delas de? Eller för att ställa frågan radikalt från början: Vilken fråga ska institutionen egentligen vara ett svar på?

The Fantastic Institution är öppen för alla med intresse av organisering och hur vi kan tänka formerna för konst och gemenskap i samhället. Konferensens första dag ägnas helt åt föreläsningar och presentationer. Dag två och tre sker på konstscenen Skogen med plats för samtal i små och stora grupper. Du kan välja att enbart delta första dagen eller under samtliga tre dagar. I biljettpriset ingår även mat och föreställningen Oslo av Mette Edvardsen.

The Fantastic Institution

Can we dream of fantastic institutions? Can we fantasize about the shape, functions, and resources of future cultural institutions? Is it possible to speculate about other ways of organising artistic processes and political discussions within the public sphere?

We find ourselves today between the collapse of modernity's ideals - industrialisation, growth and the belief in progress, the welfare project, and nation states - and a difficult to interpret future where new stories and models are taking shape. Our perspective towards social cooperation, work, economy, politics, and the limits of nature are shifting. We meet these changes as both stories about possibility and as dark dystopia, and it is obvious that in many ways we lack a collective understanding about how to navigate through this and act. Meanwhile the institutions, which should have the capacity to bear these complicated discussions, have been under pressure: How can we bother thinking underneath the weight of human exhaustion, information noise, bureaucratisation, political populism, and accelerating financial shortsightedness?

The term "institution" comes etymologically from the verb "institurere" - to launch or establish over the long term. To think of the institution as a verb, as an ongoing making and transforming, can open up contemplation about what institutions "institute:" What do they - aside from containing endless lines of art projects, presentations, and exhibitions - actually establish over the long term? What concrete political and economic choices and practices build up the operations of an institution? What knowledge and resources accumulate, and how are they shared? Or, to make the question more radical: What question should the institution actually be the answer to?

The Fantastic Institution is open for everyone who is interested in organisation and how we can imagine new forms of art and community in our society. The first day of the conference comprises entirely of lectures and presentations. The second and third days take place at the art platform Skogen and give space for discussion in small and large groups. You can choose to participate in just the first day or during all three days. The ticket price includes food and the performance Oslo by Mette Edvardsen.
